Today we discussed models of masculinity and femininity in American Beauty. Apart from (and possibly partly due to) the fact that I pretty much disagreed with a lot of what my peers said, I enjoyed it.

But the actual good news is: the lecturer did not set the upper limit of words for the paper we're supposed to write for her proseminar. And this one time I plan to be ruthless, because this pretty much sets it - I will write about Wesley Wyndam-Pryce.

W sumie to ja nie miałam aż takich przemyśleń na temat tego filmu. Po obejrzeniu byłam zawiedziona - wszyscy się tak zachwycali, a film był... no płytkawy po prostu. Ładnie zrobiony, chwilami ironiczno-smutno-zabawny, ale właściwie o czym? O tym, jacy ludzie są beznadziejni? Jak kompleksy, traumy i inne smutki ich wykańczają? Nie wiem, widziałam go już dość dawno temu i nie pamiętam wszystkiego, może coś ważnego mi umknęło, może teraz odebrałabym go inaczej, ale wtedy ściągnęłam muzykę i zapomniałam o filmie ;)

Nota bene - zgadzam się, że zakończenie jest beznadziejne (jaki dół z tym voiceoverem, w ogóle morał ten film ma?! A Lester nie śpi z Angelą Bo Ona Jest Chyba Dziewicą. EWWW.)

A co do dziewictwa - chodzi mi głównie o to, że wydaje mi się, że założenie, że ona mówi akurat wtedy jemu prawdę jest strasznie uproszczone i wydaje mi się, że tak naprawde nie wiemy. Choć pewnie chcieli, żebyśmy uznali, że jest dziewicą. Ale... uproszczenie.

A poza tym ona sprawiała trochę wrażenie, że była molestowana. :/

Jeden Norton zestawu nie przebije ale jako całość, intryga, prowadzenie akcji, prawdopodobieństwo (poza historycznym XD) Iluzjonista wywarł na mnie większe wrażenie.

Funny thing is, I really don't love it! I loved discussing it, but I find the idea that I should somehow sympathise with Lester or Rick - whom I found so absolutely disgusting - abhorrent ;)

It felt like one of those very skillful manipulations ;) And I was very much creeped out by the hopeful ending.

As to my essay - yeah, I know! I really want to write this paper :D \o/

Ah, American Beauty. I sort of actually hated it, really, when I realised what I was apparently supposed to love about it, and then almost all of my friends did love it, and I had to argue my way around it so many times I lost count. Like Scent of a Woman.

Especially the ending bugged me; here I was sure that even though the film annoyed the everloving fuck out of me, the scriptwriters were self-conscious enough to not treat the blown-out-of-proportions "philosophy" seriously and leave the film a satire. And then the ending happened. What a joke.

I mean, I really enjoyed the first half of the movie, and even parts of the second, but ultimately - it was well-packaged but empty, wasn't it? Simplistic and obvious, and above all, annoying.

The ending was awful.

1) Angela was criticised most, wasn't she? The lying virgin-slut! All her fault.
2) Poor Lester. He RESPECTED her virginity! Let me retch my guts out. What a creep, what a disgusting person. And he was awful to his clearly disturbed wife -__-
3) Rick is a voyeur, a criminal and a creep, and yet somehow we're to empathise. Well, I don't.

And the bag was pretty, but the way they used it was pretentious. And yeah, everyone loves it and takes for granted that Actually Angela Was A Virgin!!!1!11

But I liked watching it... anyway. They're good at their stuff, aren't they, these filmmakers.

I wish I knew how they did this. Usually when I don't like a film, I just don't like it, and voice my opinion in form of offensive remarks (I'm terrible to watch films with, really), but with American Beauty, the dislike sort of lurked in my subconsciousness right until the end.

And don't forget the oppressed closeted gay father. Angela might've been a virgin-slut; he was a Nazi. (Dude.) Alternatively, Jane and her problems? The "my tits look actually natural instead of like Pamela Anderson's" kind of problems? These problems are Meaningful; they make you Deep.

Every character, I'm afraid, more or less made me want to beat them with a shovel. Lester was a douche (and if a middle-aged horny douche wanted to jump my bones like a crazy maniac, I'd probably tell him I was a virgin, too; hell, I'd tell him I had syphilis, or AIDS); his wife seemed overplayed; Rick was a sodding psycho, oh my god. Whomever am I supposed to sympathise with here? The suicidal perv or the junkie voyeur?

My reaction to the bag was more or less "Dude, just get on with it and show The Seventh Seal already! Jesus." because I'm allergic to this kind of grandiose narrative devices. Was it even a narrative device? I think it aspired to be one.

I wish I heard from you more often, too! Mostly I just don't have the time to sit down and have a chat with anyone, whether due to actual lack of time (I sort of come and go like the Flying Dutchman, sitting in front of the screen just long enough to watch the new Who episode, or lose valuable sleeping hours on anime marathons) or my own neurosis I'm not sure. I hate American Beauty the same way and for the same reasons I hate the work of Norman Mailer and Jack Kerouac. It's all about elevating self-centered penis worship to a form of mysticism. *yawn* The psycho neighbor dad was almost right about what was going on at least in that it was all about the glorification of the phallus.

And as always, I agree with you. I enjoyed discussing it precisely because I did not find it deep, meaningful or worthy of my admiration. It was well done. It was also something I couldn't agree with at all.
