Recommend a film to me. I've decided it's past time I started watching films in addition to television series. I've yet to see so many well-known ones!

So I decided a good way to go would be to ask advice. What is your favourite movie? Or one you enjoy as a guilty pleasure? Please, tell me and provide a shortish explanation why, and I shall be adding seen titles to the list :) I particularly like films that mix the genres :D

But I'm A Cheerleader
Natural Born Killers
Secretary
The Godfather
Kill Me Later
Cruel Intentions
Map of the World

Favorites:

I ♥ Huckabees - existential comedy, Jude Law.
A Room With a View - Really pretty, captures Forster's tone wonderfully.

Guilty Pleasure - Bring It On - makes fun of itself, and has Eliza Dushku (plus has a bunch of other Buffy links)
Eurotrip - Manages to be hilarious and not too obnoxious or embarrassing to enjoy, Mat Damon pretending to be a punk rock singer.

I just saw Children of Men recently and am goggle-eyed at how good it was. It's very dark and quite violent, but the violence is always horrifying, not amusing, and the movie never lets the audience forget that every time a human being dies, that person had friends and family who will cry about it. Wow.

It's directed by Alfonso Cuaron: who knew - he does more than just gloomy Harry Potter movies. :-)

Oh, and you might like Heathers. It's very satirical.

"Thank You For Smoking" is the best movie I saw recently. It's about a lobbyist for the tobacco industry. Very cynical, very fun.

If you take a look at that list: http://girlupnorth.livejournal.com/46921.html , you may see that I like:

* movies with out-of-sequence narration
* British movies
* musicals
* some rom coms

(Actually, the list looks a bit different now. Devil wears Prada moved to the favourites list and The Prestige also joined ;D)

And generally, I recommend all the movies from the Favourites, if you haven't seen some of them :)

Little Big Man -it's an oldie but a goody

My Man Godfrey- the one with William Powell- an even more old one but sheer fun

Georgie Girl- depressing, funny, good

The Devils- by Ken Russell it's bizarre and scary and difficult to define

Pow Wow Highway- not sure if you can find that in poland but it's wonderful

Dance Me Outside- also a great Indin movie but terribly depressing amid the laughter

I enjoy these as unashamed pleasures ^_^

I love adventure films because they usually have one or more of the following:

Smart one-liners
Hot actors and actresses
Delightful villains
Exotic locales
Film acts as a metaphor for something Vewwey Sewious.
Cool special effects
Good actors (theatre-standards)

So, my list remains:

Star Wars (Harrison Ford! Carrie Fisher! Mos Eisley! Yoda! Chewie! Count Dooku! Anakin in part III! Awesome effects in II!)

Indiana Jones (I won't demean the films by writing their about them)

The Mummy and yeah, even The Mummy Returns (Imhotep Vosloo mm! man, those sets!)

Pirates of the Caribbean (what?)

LotR - not anytime-viewing, but it goes well, yeah.

I actually prefer bad-films... like 300 or Troy or Dune.
