Would you please satisfy my curiosity? I've been feeling upset for the last two days and decided to start re-reading du Maurier's Rebecca as a comfort book. And it started me wondering, how well known the author and the book is, in the world and in Poland. Please, fill in your part of the poll! :D

Read and adored; loved Hitchcock´s version; liked less the newer TV miniseries with Charles Dance & Diana Rigg.

Trivia: in Hungary, as Rebecca is a Jewish female name and it was first published in the early forties, it was titled here "The Mistress of Manderley Manor".

Trivia II: "Rebecca" is so well-known and loved in Austria, a new and original musical based on it will open on 28th September this year in the Raimundtheater in Vienna. Max de Winter will be played by Uwe Kröger. And I´ll see it if I have to beg or steal for a ticket *g* Cheers!

I adore it, too - tv miniseries version was what I've seen first - actually just one scene, when Mrs Danvers tries to make the heroine kill herself. Years later I've read Rebecca and the scene came to me, and I was instantly reminded of that series, even though i didn't know what it was about at the time. I've only seen Hitchcock's film recently, but I liked it, too.

It's sad that Rebecca is almost unknown here :( I shall have to change that! *g*

It's very well known in the UK, so much so that I know the basic plot despite not having watched the film or read the book.

You don't have an option "seen the movie, haven't read the book (because I never encountered it physically)" ;)

Oh, that's uncool! You need to read it! :D Isn't it available in the libraries? I think it should be :)

(I actually bought myself a copy during a sales at my local library, for precisely 1 zł)

I liked the book, thought it well written and everything, but Rebecca was such a twit that I couldn't route for her at all. I kept hoping whatshisname (been a while since I read it) would kill her, too. Or toss her out.

*shrug* However much I didn't like Rebecca herself, though, I did finish the book which means I must have liked the book despite the heroine. (Although I also finished Wuthering Heights of which I hated all the characters, even the narrator! But, again, it was well written.) :-)

Well, Rebecca the dead wife was a monster, but I did like the protagonist, despite her being somewhat silly and definitely not assertive enough. But I felt for her, certainly.

I hated all the characters in Wuthering Heights, too ;)

Last night I dreamt I went to Manderley...

One of my all time favorites. I actually love Hitchcock's movie as well.
