This is a meme I gacked from [livejournal.com profile] junediamanti. It is about my Ten Favourite Female Literary Characters.

The order is purely coincidental.

1) Obviously Novinha. This character appears in "Speaker for the Dead", which is second in O. S. Card's Ender series. I liked her because she is strong, independent... and very toxic. She believed that if she married the man she loved he would die, so she married a man who loved her desperately and made him unhappy. She has five (or was that six?) children - and not with her husband. And still, despite all her faults, she is lovable and capable of love.

2) Nanny Ogg. This Discworld character is often overlooked - because she seems to be less intelligent or powerful than Granny Weatherwax. But - the clan of Oggs is all at her disposal. And she can cook! Well, she has also spent most of her youth in a horizontal position, if Granny is to be believed. She is also the owner of one of the most wonderful cats in the world - Greebo.

3) Danaerys Targaryen from George R.R. Martin's Song of Ice and Fire series. She is independant, strong and intelligent. She can be also vengeful and cruel, but most of all - she is increadibly feminine. A born queen.

4) Sansa from the above. She is not very intelligent and definitely not independant; a woman who will wait in her tower for the knight to come and rescue her. Still, I sense great potential in this character. I can't wait to see her develop in the next books of the series. Oh - and did I mention that I envy her her husband?

5) Lucy from C. S. Lewis's Narnia. What can I say - she is simply wonderful. I've always wanted to be like her. Not a chance, but.

6) Styliane Daleinoi from Guy Gavriel Kay's "Sailing to Sarantium". This woman is dangerous, sensous and reminds me of a cat. She is also arrogant, capable of the worst sins and cruel. She is one of Kay's best female creations - although Empress Alixiana is a close second. Styliane is as Slytherin as they come. And yet we see her reasons for every evil deed she commits. And I like her way of hiding her vulnerability.

7) Ronja from A. Lindgren novel which English title I don't know. She is optimistic, opinionated and full of energy. And she bites people she doesn't like.

8) Scarlett O'Hara. Obviously, from Mitchell's "Gone with the Wind". I know she is arrogant, conceited and egotistic. That's why I like her. She was so used to getting what she wanted, and yet, when the war came, she struggled and fought to live and keep Tara.

9) Fool from R. Hobb's Assassin and Fool series - I mean, the gender of this character isn't determined, as of yet (I haven't read the newest novel so if you know, don't tell me!), but I am pretty sure it's a she. Why I like her - because she is so enigmatic and interesting. Why do I think her female? Well, because Bastard mentions that "he" uses more water for bathing than any other person Bastard knows.

10) Death - but not just Sandman's sister, also the one that appears in Sapkowski's Wiedźmin series. She once tells Wiedźmin, that she is there for the people not to cross the threshold alone. It is one of the most beautiful moments in the novel.

Now, why are they mostly fantasy novels characters? I have no idea ;)
