I've never yet gone to all the trouble of recommending a story on my LJ, but I am going to do so now.

Title: The Darkness
Author: Azrael Geffen
Archive: The Whispers - http://www.thepotionsmaster.net/whispers/authors.php?no=465
Rating: NC-17
Why do I recommend? I cut for I'm a nice person...

A time ago I saw Azrael's first story, "Objects of Desire". I read the summary and was quite sure it was a bad story. It was supposed to be about Harry, Ron and Hermione writing a magical contract and promising to lose their virginities in a year. I thought - now is there anything more silly, immature, pointless? Who would even want to read such a thing? And then I saw Molly (The One Who Owns ObscurusBooks) recommend it and I thought - well, she is a clever one, why would she rec crap? I went to read OoD and I was more and more compelled with each chapter. It's a story of betrayal, love, passion, hatred and just about everything. It's involving in the most profound sense. It's a story that made me cry, laugh, bite my nails. I wasn't sure as to the ending until I read it. It's the story that converted me to slash. I mean it. Her slash is so increadibly sexy... And her het is unbelievable. There are some who claim her Absinthe scene to be the most erotic thing they've ever read. I adore that story. For each and every character she created. Three-dimensional characters are her greatest forte, in my opinion. Her Snape is such a personality; her Hermione is very, very canon; her Harry is sexy; her Draco is just as I like him - slightly needy and proud. And her Lucius... OMG. Let's just say I had fits when I read that his second name is Armand (points at the icon). I know some don't like Lucius, but her Lucius... He might not be canon, but let's just say I'd gladly make him canon. But I'm getting long-winded and not to the point. Her new story. That's the spirit.
"The Darkness" - so far we've only seen the Prologue, but what a Prologue that is! It is excellent in style (I'm not sure whether OzRatBag is still her beta, but if she is they both deserve great praise!) It is making one interested in the story straight away. It has this book-like feel to it that makes you bloody envious. If I wrote like she does, I'd be trying to write best-sellers. But she's gracing the fandom with her talent, and should be hailed for that! And not only that, she's also so far been very reliable because she hasn't abandoned OoD despite big RL changes. I bow to her for that!
She introduces OC that are instantly interesting. She doesn't lose herself in pointless back-story. She is brave in her storytelling, introducing completely unexpected twists and making them seem natural and what-else-could-happen-that's-the-only-logical-conclusion. I am sure The Darkness will show the same qualities. It seems to do, so far.
I loved the dialogue in the prologue. Harry and Hermione characterisation was original, and yet they seemed so regognisable! The prose is increadible - so elegant and pleasant that it seems it must be terribly easy to write - which probably means it was actually requiring great skill. I can't praise it enough. Oh - and it's also dark. In the best possible sense.
The story is much better than my portrayal of it. I heartily recommend it. And all Az's other stories.
