Ah, American Beauty. I sort of actually hated it, really, when I realised what I was apparently supposed to love about it, and then almost all of my friends did love it, and I had to argue my way around it so many times I lost count. Like Scent of a Woman.

Especially the ending bugged me; here I was sure that even though the film annoyed the everloving fuck out of me, the scriptwriters were self-conscious enough to not treat the blown-out-of-proportions "philosophy" seriously and leave the film a satire. And then the ending happened. What a joke.
