novin_ha: Cylons say all you need is love ([bsg] love is all you need)
1. A long time ago, I used to have a livejournal, but maybe it's time to migrate. This might be temporary, but having a record seems attractive.

2. March was exhausting at work, partly due to pressure, largely due to health issues (sinus infection: -1000/10, would not recommend).

3. I did get a lot of reading done: mostly Vorkosigan saga, and my impressions are on my goodreads, but the general thing is: what an enjoyable, engrossing world, where the more you read, the more you care, and with characters that develop and grow increasingly complex. I'm currently on Memory (volume 10, though it depends how you count), taking some short breaks for brief fiction and to read one Tessa Dare romance (first Spindle Cove; I'm told books 2, 4 and 5 are where it's at, so I'm excited for that).

I think I'd like to read something about an AI character / with a major AI character afterwards, but I don't know what.

I'm also fancasting older Matthew Rhys as Aral Vorkosigan. (Wife's idea.)

4. That, by the way, is because March was also time for re-watching The Americans. We're at the beginning of season 4 now, and while this is hardly as game-changing as the rewatch of Justified we induldged in in January (which meant finally learning what Dixie Mafia was), there is more time to pay attention to certain details. Mostly: that Americans apparently think 1980s USSR had soft white toilet paper in prisons and private homes. (Most everything associated with Poland seems to be pretty inaccurate, by the way. The Polish is either mispronounced or Russian, and historical facts are stretched really thin.)

5. Otherwise, I spent a lot of time watching late 1990s/early 2000s TV series Any Day Now for my dissertation. It's so frustrating: the show had such potential, and some of the flashbacks are truly inspired, but the contemporary legal plotlines are painfully dated, boring and badly written. And now that we're on season 4, they recast child actors and the new ones are... not so great. I admire Wife for watching a lot of it with me. Though she does seem to remember she left something in the other room a lot when it's on.

6. We went to the cinema twice this month: to see Hidden Figures, on whose subject I don't have much to add, and Spoor. We enjoyed both. I highly recommend seeing Spoor at the cinema: even if one doesn't appreciate the admittedly imperfect plot / characterisation (which took some liberties with amazing source material of Olga Tokarczuk's novel), the cinematography, and nature photography in particular, are hypnotic.

(What should one know about Poland before watching Agnieszka Holland's latest? We have the largest and oldest forests in the EU, and some of the worst environmental protections, and the hunting lobby is practically our NRA.)

I don't like the person I become over the summer, whiny and angry. But I don't know if I can help it much.

So I won't focus on that and will instead post pointless.

Okay, so this post is either for people who are CSI addicts and up-to-date with the sixth season, or for people who don't care for CSI but care for seeing what made me totally freak out and be awed.

What is that supposed to be? )

I have found the solution. I know what I need to be happy!

Hugh Laurie, in large quantities, possibly with a cane.

::dies of hormones::

That said, this Monday is officially a Day On Crack. It started with a bus stopping in the middle of a street, making it impossible for me to cross it. Children from within were looking at me, so - obviously - I stuck out my tongue at them. They replied in kind. Except for one brat, armed in a mobile phone-cum-camera.

And then I had a writing class, and again, I forgot I'm supposed to sit politely and silently and argued about a) a mistake the teacher made (I never meant to argue, I just asked if that form was possible!) b) mistakes our textbook is full of.

For one, the textbook has seemingly never heard of such a word as 'may'. 'Can' abuse makes my teeth hurt. And 'many masterpieces often use difficult vocabulary'? ::headdesk::

I've decided to finally post book, fic and film recommendations. I've been meaning to for a long time :)

1) Guy Gavriel Kay Tigana )

2. [livejournal.com profile] arsenicjade's Origins of Myth )

3. This is mostly for my Polish f-list - because the film will be shown tomorrow on TV4 Things You Can Tell Just Looking At Her )

In other news, I got a 4 in my Latin test, which is more than a success. Yay!

And - my package from [livejournal.com profile] le_mru arrived. ♥ Now I am off to watch Lost, probably soon to become my new series obsession.

1. Today is the day I did not wear my (otherwise beautiful) cap for the first time in months. I could feel the wind (very pleasant one) make my hair (longer than it was in years) a total mess. It was fun. Tomorrow Ysabell (my Long Black Leather Coat Love) is back to being worn. I so love pretending to be darkastic stylish.

2. I watched two episodes of the second series of Grey's Anatomy and actually, as much as I do not like Meredith much, I found her very... enjoyable. It was such a "feel better" morning thing to do. It improved my (already good) mood.

3. I am being tempted to somehow scramble together the 130 zlotys the Placebo concert is going to cost... Now that I know I would have someone to go with. ::looks pointedly in the direction of Gdynia:: I am thinking... this might be my only chance ever to go to a huge rock concert, and isn't it one of those things a wild student ought to experience?

4.Even my advertisement mail was funny today: )

ETA: I've just been informed why the title sounded familiar. I knew Ms Białołęcka was a HP ff writer, but now I know which one. THE SQUEE. I mean... Wow. And she comes from Home!Town, like I do ;)

5. Meme: )

6. Now I am off to do some more Grammar and Introduction to Cultural Studies. Have a good week :D

I know I said I was going to spend the weekend learning. So far I've done no homework, studied no Storey, read one Pratchett and a bit of Castle of Otranto... but now I am off to watch Isaacs The Patriot because my will is that weak.

And there is Ennis Heather Ledger, too.

ETA: I just remembered what I wanted to write about a week ago ;) A letter came to my Father, calling him to task. The funniest bit is, they say if the time is not convenient, he can contact them and inform them when he would be available.

Um... In 19 years, if we believe in reincarnation.

Nothing gives me such a pleasant boost of energy as watching politics. Sometimes it angers me, sometimes it makes me laugh, sometimes it makes me feel endangered... but it is never boring. Not ever.

Beginning with Kaczyński (Law & Order Justice leader) shouting "You will never govern again!" at his political opponents, going through Tusk (PO leader) likening Kaczyński to Lepper (co-allition partner of Law&Justice and populist party leader), continuing with a special break so that Kaczyński may shout how he was offended by being compared to Lepper, his co-allition partner, getting to Rokita (♥) asking if from then on likening Kaczyński to Lepper is forbidden and ending with Kurski (the one we all hate, dears) asking if Rokita drank from the glass of water because if so he wants another?

What do I need sitcomes for?!

Even the soap opera from hell doesn't entertain me to quite that extent, despite the fact that Evil!Suicidal!Twin's ex-girlfriend (the one that he wanted to kill himself because of) reappeared on screen.

Oh... and they are going to have many, many new commissions of inquiry. Nice touch, that one. They are quite entertaining, too - even Gosiewski, an important Law&Justice MP admitted he wanted to be part of one because it's a great adventure. ::is mindboggled::

As someone suggested - the next investigation should find out why Jagiełło did not make sufficient use of his victory over Teutonic Order in 1410.

Lots of political love,

Novinha

I am still alive. Moreover, quite gladly so. Apart from my German Teacher keeping us half an hour longer than she ought to, I happen to have had a nice day. A letter came from my former classmate. My prize for winning that long forgotten homour contest arrived. I am writing this during a commercial break in Desperate Housewives.

Oh, and I learnt about italics versus quotation marks/inverted commas. The joy.

But it's not all flowers and butterflies here - my favourite TV guide has just gone through a reform and became useless. Well, not useless, but much too colourful. Yuck. A certain person abused my name and I am going to post about that once I calm down a bit.

And in addition to that... Obrzydliwy potworek językowy zaobserwowany w reklamie )

1. I saw the whole Oscars gala yesterday night and I don't have much to say that [livejournal.com profile] stephanie206 wouldn't have said better.

But - I really wish Heather Ledger had got the Oscar. I think his performance was simply outstanding. It is not often I am moved like that and he managed it with his awesome way of playing here. I never thought he had it in him.

And I've been thinking about Nicole Kidman's Disappearing Body - she is getting thinner and thinner - and maybe we, Muggles, don't know the whole truth? She resembles a snake, all tall and long and thin - maybe a curse had been cast?

And Nagini/Nicole is mother of a new snakefemmeslash genre? Teh new OTP?

2. In which Novinha makes fun of the weirdest and biggest Polish soap opera M jak miłość - L like Love )

Watching political chat-shows when Jacek Kurski appears is not a good idea - something I ought to have realised long ago. He always, always manages to push my buttons. That such a piece of scum even exist is an insult to humanity.

Yes. You might remember him from my posts about the campaign - he is the "Tusk's father willingly joined Wehrmacht" guy.

And today, he touched another topic I am very, very sensitive about - antisemitism. Or did he?

A long rant follows )

In other news, I got myself this new shiny icon. Just couldn't resist the temptation.

And first episodes of Desperate Housewives? Bree ruled. Totally and utterly.

While Susan sucked.
